History :

Pomegranate is native of the region extending from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalized over the whole of Mediterranean region since very ancient times. It has been in cultivation through out India and the drier parts of southeast Asia, Malaya, the East Indies, Mediterranean region and tropical Africa (Morton, 1987).

The most important growing regions are China, Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, India, Burma and Saudi Arabia (Facciola, 1990)

Pomegranate is a highly delicious juicy fruit and is held to high esteem from time immemorial, both as a fruit and in medicine. Good quality of pomegranates were grown in the Hanging Gardens Babylon and were also known in ancient Egypt. During the time of Prophet Moses, quality pomegranates were in cultivation throughout Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. The city of Rimmon was well-known for its quality Rummon i.e., pomegranate.

Medical Properties :

The caloric value of teh pomegranate fruit is 65. Its juice is easily digestible and contains about 15% invert sugar. It is a rich source of sodium and also contains a good amount of riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, Vit. C. Protein and fat contains are negligible.

Pomegranate is a good food and a medicine of great value. It is a tonic for Heart patients, highly efficacious in the inflammation of the stomach and effective to check heart pain. The juice of the fruit
is an excellent cooling beverage and allays thirst in diarrhoea. it acts as a good medicine for both diarrhoea and dysentery. for many ailments such as colitis, anaemia, jaundice, high blood pressure, piles and arthritis, its juice is an effective medicine. When given with honey, it reduces biliousness. Pomegranate fruit is also prescribed in many disorders under the Homoeopathic medicine system.

Medical benefit:
  • The decoction of the bark of pomegranate, which contains an alkaloid pellatrierine and tonic acid, is a highly useful medicine for the expulsion of worms, including tapeworms. this decoction is reported to be effective also in tuberculosis.
  • Bark - Astringent, used in piles and colic, strengthen gums.
  • Bark juice stops hiccups and strengthens stomach. Juice concentrate is applied in the eyes to improve eye sight.
  • Flowers - useful in biliousness, sore throat, sore eyes, ulcers are styptic to gums; check vomiting; applied to hydrocele.
  • The bright - red flowers are also a source of good quality colour pigments.
  • Fruit - The ripe fruit is sweet, diuretic, fattening, laxative, tonic, allys thirst; used in spleen complaints, brain diseases, sore throat and eyes, scabies, earache, chest complaints and bronchitis, enrich the blood.
  • Unripe fruit is used in keratitis and reduces inflammation.
  • Seeds - Used in vomiting, biliousness, lever and kidney disorders, scabies, sore eyes; enrich blood and astringent to the bowels.
  • Dried seeds are traditionally used in sauces and chutneys which are appetising and digestive. The juice is considered as cooling, refrigerant and is given in fever, haemorrhages, leucorrhoea and removes tapeworms.
  • The pomegranate flowers are greatly valued for their medicinal properties. These are prescribed for many ailments and to check miscarriage.
  • Sweet pomegranate - The sweet pomegranate with soft flesh on the seeds is considered as tonic to the heart and lever and produces good quality of blood. It quenches thirst, is diuretic and most appropriate for people of warm temperament. It strengthen the vital organs  of the body. Its juice  is effective against piles diarrhoea, haemorrhage and haemoptysis. it provides good nutrition to tuberculosis patients.
  • Sour pomegranate - Flower buds are given to relieve bronchitis, fever and cough. The juice is effective in reducing blood heat, and burning sensation in chest. It stops nausea and vomiting, and its diuretic action is more intense than the sweet variety. The decoction of rind of fruit and bark powder are used as anthelmintic. Dried and powdered flowers are used as toth powder. It is beneficial in jaundice due to heat.
  • Sore - sweet variety (Bitter Sweet) - This is called Qandhari Anar and its qualities are similar to the sweet variety but more effective.




Juice & leaves :

1. Prepare whole (with skin) Pomegranate juice mix with Honey and take before breakfast         for fever.
2. Take 50 gms. of pomegranate seeds, 10 gms of dried ginger, 10 gms of black salt and 10     gms of white zeera (ingradient)  grind them  for powder and take small quantity of powder     after lunch and dinner. It is useful to improve good digestive system.
3. Grind dry pomegranate leaves, useful for strengthen and brightness the Teeth.
4. It is better to use whole pomegranate juice as a paste on gum for pyorrhoea.
5. Usage of Pomegranate immediate after meals is harmful,
6. Useful of pomegranate juice for ladies become smart and slim.
